Drug Delivery Devices Market: Forecast and Trends

Global Drug Delivery Devices market was valued USD 1243.56 billion by the end of 2017 and expected to reach USD 1825.67 billion by the end of 2025 with approx. CAGR of 6.45% during the forecast period. Growing awareness towards prevalence of chronic diseases, rising geriatric population, rising cases of unwanted pregnancy, growth of biological market and technological advancement are the main key factors that are responsible for growth of the Drug Delivery Devices market.

Government support and increase funding for drug research and development, lifestyle changes, rise in patient preference for drug delivery devices are also the main factors that fuel the market. Increasing launch of new innovative products is also responsible for the growth of the market.

Drug Delivery Devices Market: Overview

Drug delivery devices are specialized medical devices and equipment that are used for dispatching the drugs into human bodies. These devices are made for dispatching special drugs in the desired level to the target area through a special route of administration.  This leads to more accurate, easier, and less frequent dosing and decrease side effects and drug toxicity.

Diabetes is one of the common chronic diseases of the world. Needles and syringes are the traditional method of the treatment. But this process is much painful and costly. But with the invention of microneedles and Insulin pens, the process gets simplified, no painful, cost effective. In traditional way, needles and syringes are not reusable but microneedles are reusable.

Microneedle arrays are one of the best examples of drug delivery device that deliver medicines through skin. In these arrays, dozens of microscopic needles which are far thinner than a strand of hair are present. They are fabricated to contain a medicine and so small that although they penetrate the skin , they don’t reach to the nerves of skin.

Drug Delivery Devices Market: By Route of Administration

Drug Delivery Device Market is segmented in Oral Drug Delivery, Injectable Drug Delivery, Tropical Drug Delivery, Ocular Drug Delivery, Pulmonary Drug Delivery, Nasal Drug Delivery, Transmucosal Drug Delivery on the basis of route of administration.

Oral Drug Delivery: Drugs are administered orally or through mouth. Many drugs like liquids, tablets, capsules are in this category. Oral route is the most convenient, usually the safest and least expensive. In this system, a drug moves through digestive tract. There it is absorbed in stomach, passes through the intestinal wall and transported to liver. From liver it is transported to the target site through bloodstream. This process takes some time for effect.

Injectable Drug Delivery: In this type, drugs are administered through injection.  95% of injections are administered in curative care, 3% for immunization and rest 2% for other purposes such as blood transfusions.

Tropical Drug Delivery: In this type of medication, drug is applied to a particular place of body. Creams, Gels, Lotions, and Ointments are generally used in this type of drug administration.

Ocular Drug Delivery: Drugs used for eye treatment (such as glaucoma, conjunctivitis). In this system, drugs can be mixed with inactive substances to make a liquid, gel or ointment so that they can be applied in the eyes. Liquid eye drops are very easy to use.

Pulmonary Drug Delivery: In this system, drugs are directly administered to the lungs. This is achieved through inhalers or nebulizers like in the case in Asthma.

Nasal Drug Delivery: In this type, drugs are breathed in and absorbed through the thin mucous membrane. Once absorbed, the drug enters into the blood stream. Nicotine for smoking and Sumatriptan for migraine headaches are common in this system.

Transmucosal Drug Delivery: In this type, drug is diffused through mucous membrane. This refers to sublingual, vaginal or rectal, Otic (ear) routes.

Drug Delivery Devices Market: By Application

Drug delivery is important for the treatment of chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, nervous system and many more. Drug delivery devices offer direct delivery of drugs to the site of therapy, resulting in the improvement of treatment and reduction in side-effects. This system is very quick in action and patient feels its effect very fast.

Drug Delivery Devices Market: By Technology

Based on technology, the products are categorized into Bluetooth, Near Field Communications (NFC) and others. People suffering from chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes and heart disease find it hard to keep track of the time for the next pill. To overcome this problem, researchers have developed and implantable device that can be remotely controlled and can deliver a drug on its own. Precisely when needed with accurate dosage. These implants run on battery and Bluetooth enable chips are fitted in it.

NFC enabled system generally assist the visually impaired patients to keep track of their medication. In this system, pharma companies put NFC tags on or into product package as a part of label or closure. They provide unique identity to each product. These tags can also linked directly to the pharmaceutical Internet of Things (IoT), so that people can check about dosing information, diagnostic tools, and supply chain details.

Large number of connected drug delivery systems work with Bluetooth as it is easily available and cheaper to other available technology. Moreover, Bluetooth technology is compatible with most of the smartphones and media devices available in the market. Bluetooth segment shares the highest revenue from the market.

Drug Delivery Devices Market: By Product

Drug delivery devices are segmented into Connected Sensors and Integrated Connected Devices.

Connected sensors can be connected or fitted to existing devices , therefore, reduce the cost of switching to new integrated system which are costly. Integrated Connected Devices are fitted with different sensors in a single device and deliver more valuable information to the patient. These devices can be connected with smartphones with the help of Near Field Communications (NFC) and Bluetooth, enabling dose monitoring and dosing reminder system. Market study shows that integrated connected devices are expected to grow with CAGR of 28.5% over the forecast period.

Drug Delivery Devices Market: By End User

On the basis of end users, the market is segments into healthcare provider and homecare centers.  Healthcare provider segment hold the largest market share and contributed around 65.35% of total revenue by the end of 2025.
